Making inventories

Two kinds:
a. Location of typefounders' moulds
b. Describing individual typefounders' moulds.

b. Describing individual moulds.

Below is a suggestion for a list of details that might be desribed for each mould. It is likely that this inventory would provides too much detail: what is essential? I've separated thirteen groups:
  1. General
  2. The bottom plate
  3. The jets (mouthpiece)
  4. The carriage
  5. The body
  6. The gauges
  7. The registers
  8. The wings
  9. The stool
10. The wooden parts

13. Underlays (Asidue?)

1. General
- Can it be dated?
- Origin? (location, maker)
- Intended use: roman, italic, hebrew, ...
- Are there other marks and numbers?
- References to photograps, negatives, publications

2. The bottom plate (French model)
- Dimensions (height, width)
- Material?

3. The jets (Mouthpiece)
- Material?
- The shape of the funnel (round, rectangular)
- Height of the funnel in millimetres
- Angel of the funnel
- Has the mouthpiece an 'apron' (overhang)
- Has the mouthpiece got a wing?
- How is the jet attached to the carriage or bottom plate?

4. Carriage
- Dimensions (height, width)
- How is the carriage attached to the wood or bottom plate?

5. Body
- Left or right? (Jet pointing up, seen from the inside)
- Dimensions (height, width)
- Straight (rectangular) or in angle for cursive type
- Nick in top-half or bottom half?
- Location of the nick (distance from shoulder, distance from feet)
- Thickness of the nick
- Is there a core? (aim: to reduce weight?)
- Are the grooves visible?

6. Gauges (male and female) (French model)
- Dimensions (height, width)

7. Registers
- Are the registers adjustable or fixed?
- Dimensions (height, width)?
- Schroefvorm zichtbaar?

8. Wings (German model)
- Dimensions
- How are the wings attached to the carriage?

9. The Stool
- Which shape?
- Is the stool adjustable?
- How is it secured?: extra screw

10. The woods
- Dimensions (Height, width). - Jobet? (how is the matrix attached to the top half?)
- Gimblet? (how is the rope of the matrix attached to the top half?)
- Remarks

11. The hooks
- Attached?
- Position

12. The spring
- Shape of the spring: curls, omega-shaped, u-shaped. (Dimensions?)
- Attachement to the mould: in carriage? in wood?
- Is there a heat-protection? (wood, ivory, rope?)

13. Underlays
- Between jet and Carriage/body. Thickness?
- Between body and carriage. Thickness
